Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A youth group in Cozumel is working to connect the community with conservation efforts, aiming to instill pride and responsibility in protecting the island’s ecosystems that support both life and tourism.
Jovenes MAB Cozumel focuses on engaging new generations through educational activities, field trips, and cultural preservation. Enrique Benavides, a member of the group, explained their mission is to serve as “a bridge that connects young people with conservation initiatives.” The group uses workshops, conferences, and hands-on activities to foster a love for the island and encourage youth to join environmental committees and projects.
The group emphasizes that while Cozumel is known for tourism, its true foundation is nature. “All visitors come to enjoy the beaches, reefs, and mangroves,” Benavides noted, highlighting that preserving these resources as heritage and legacy is a priority.
Jovenes MAB has organized beach cleanups and mangrove restoration projects in Punta Sur, collaborating with local institutions. Their strategy centers on taking children and youth directly into ecosystems, allowing them to learn through interactive experiences. “When they touch and feel the island, curiosity and a desire to protect it emerge,” Benavides added.
The group is also part of the IberoMap Network, which brings together youth representatives from biosphere reserves across Ibero-America. From Cozumel, they serve as Mexico’s voice in this international network, sharing experiences and strengthening alliances.
Beyond environmental work, Jovenes MAB promotes the recovery of Mayan traditions and culture, believing the island’s identity is tied to its natural surroundings. “It’s not just about caring for ecosystems, but also rescuing roots and living in harmony with nature,” Benavides emphasized.
The group invites others to join through their Facebook and Instagram pages under “Jovenes MAB,” where they post monthly calls for participation in activities or the organizing committee.
