Yacht Strikes and Lodges Under Calinda Bridge in Cancún Hotel Zone

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A yacht struck the Calinda Bridge in Cancún’s Hotel Zone and became lodged against the structure, prompting maritime and municipal authorities to launch an operation to free the vessel.

The impact occurred near kilometer 4 of the Hotel Zone as the yacht tried to pass through the area. No injuries were reported, and officials have not yet determined what caused the accident.

Maritime and city authorities arrived at the scene and assessed the situation in order to resolve the emergency and remove the boat, which remained stuck against the structure after the collision. Crews were still working to free the vessel, and it was not immediately clear how long the operation would take.

Similar Groundings in Quintana Roo

The case echoes other incidents in which yachts have run aground in the waters off Quintana Roo. A yacht named “Isla Caribe 3” ran aground off the coast of Mahahual after suffering a breakdown on Sept. 13 and has still not been removed, according to the conservation group Proyecto Aak Mahahual.

Members of the group confirmed that the grounding did not damage the reef, which had been the main concern for residents of southern Quintana Roo. However, they reported that someone stole the yacht’s main bow anchor, causing the vessel to shift and making rescue operations even more difficult.

“It is regrettable that, at a time that demands solidarity and responsibility, some people would act this way,” the collective said after learning of the theft.

The Mahahual case has raised concerns that the same problem could occur in Cancún if authorities do not move quickly to free the yacht stuck at the Calinda Bridge.
