Two Found Shot Dead in Cancún’s Polígono Sur Neighborhood

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man and a woman were found shot dead in the Polígono Sur area of this resort city, the latest in a string of violent killings in Cancún.

Neighbors discovered the bodies on Naranjo Street, two blocks from Prolongación La Luna in Supermanzana 313, according to preliminary reports. The woman had been shot in the head. Neither victim has been identified.

After receiving a call to the 911 emergency line, municipal police officers arrived and cordoned off the area while they waited for personnel from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office.

Agents from the prosecutor’s office later took charge of the scene and opened an investigation into the double homicide. Forensic examiners from the Medical Examiner’s Service subsequently removed the bodies and transported them to the morgue, where routine autopsies are expected to confirm the causes of death.

Woman Shot While Closing a Liquor Store

The killings come days after a woman was shot in the Región 260 area of Cancún in what investigators suspect may be linked to an extortion racket.

That attack took place around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, September 21, on Punta Ikal Street. According to reports, armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the woman as she was closing a business that sells alcoholic beverages.

The woman was taken to Hospital General “Jesús Kumate Rodríguez” in a Suzuki car, according to officials. When municipal police reached the scene after the 911 call, the injured woman was no longer there and officers were told she had been taken to the hospital, where they went to interview her.

The motive for the shooting has not been established, but because the victim was closing a liquor store, authorities believe it may have been a demand for an extortion payment — a practice that has affected many businesses in Cancún and elsewhere in Quintana Roo.
