Mexico City — New commemorative 20-peso coins celebrating the 2026 FIFA World Cup have begun circulating across Mexico, sparking a rush among collectors and soccer fans eager to snag them before they disappear from everyday use.
Issued by the Bank of Mexico in mid-May, the four coins hold a face value of 20 pesos and are legal tender for any purchase, though many people prefer to keep them as historical souvenirs.
Three of the designs honor Mexican host cities: Mexico City, represented by the Angel of Independence; Guadalajara, featuring La Minerva; and Monterrey, with Cerro de la Silla. The fourth coin showcases iconic elements of Mexico’s natural and cultural heritage, including a jaguar, monarch butterflies, corn, nopal, agave, and a soccer ball.
The coins are already being distributed through banks and can also turn up as change in stores, fueling excitement among those hoping to find one in their pockets.
While experts say the coins are unlikely to fetch high prices in the short term — millions have been minted — they represent a commemorative piece of a historic milestone: Mexico will become the first country to host three World Cups. More than an investment, the coins are shaping up to be a special keepsake for anyone wanting to hold onto a piece of 2026 World Cup history.
