Cancún, Quintana Roo — Workers at the luxury Parnassus Hotel in Cancún have issued a strike notice set for August 18, following repeated violations of labor rights and benefits. The announcement was made by Isaías González Cuevas, secretary of the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC), during his first official act leading the union’s Benito Juárez chapter in Cancún.
Allegations of Unpaid Wages and Unjust Dismissals
In a statement, González Cuevas called on hotel management to engage in dialogue to address workers’ demands, including fair wages, improved working conditions, and access to social security. He accused the hotel, which claims to be facing financial difficulties, of delaying salary payments, unjustly dismissing unionized employees, and failing to make mandatory employer-employee contributions to Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit).
The union leader also alleged that the hotel attempted to bring in workers from another union to escalate labor tensions.
Calls for Government Intervention
González Cuevas stated that the CROC has sought intervention from federal and state authorities, including Government Secretary Cristina Torres, Labor Secretary officials, Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, and representatives from the hotel industry. The goal, he emphasized, is to facilitate a conciliatory agreement that restores social equilibrium and workplace peace.
“The CROC prioritizes dialogue and respect for labor rights,” González Cuevas said. “We trust that through legal channels, a satisfactory agreement can be reached that ensures both the well-being of workers and the continuity of the hotel’s operations.”
He described the CROC as a catalyst for positive change, fostering innovation and collaboration between parties. “We seek solutions, not problems. We always promote a healthy, positive work environment where every employee is respected and valued.”
Context of Leadership Transition
The strike notice comes days after the murder of Mario Machuca Sánchez, the former CROC leader in Benito Juárez, Cancún. Machuca was shot dead inside his personal vehicle while parked at a car dealership. Following his death, the CROC’s national leadership, headed by González Cuevas, assumed control of the Cancún chapter pending elections to appoint a new local leader.
The Parnassus Hotel, a high-end establishment in Cancún’s hotel zone, now faces a critical labor dispute that could disrupt operations if no resolution is reached before the strike deadline.
