Wildfire ‘Jas’ Near Xcalak 70% Contained, Authorities Report

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) reported that the ‘Jas’ wildfire, located 15 kilometers northwest of the community of Xcalak in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, is 70% contained and 60% extinguished. The fire has primarily affected grasslands and medium-height jungle.

Because the affected area lies within the Manatee Sanctuary State Reserve, firefighting operations are being conducted through inter-institutional coordination. A helicopter from the Mexican Army (SEDENA) began aerial operations on Thursday, with CONAFOR personnel on board conducting reconnaissance of the fire’s perimeter.

Firefighting crews are prioritizing the protection of natural resources, containment of active fronts, and mitigation of environmental risks.

“Combat personnel were transported by sea to set up a helipad near the active fire flanks. This will allow safe takeoff and landing of crews and optimize travel times. Personnel are cutting firebreaks and conducting direct attack,” CONAFOR officials said in a statement.

In addition to CONAFOR and SEDENA, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the Quintana Roo Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the state Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas (Ibanqroo), and the Quintana Roo State Civil Protection Coordination are participating in the firefighting efforts.
