Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — María Fernanda N, the wife of social media personality Rodrigo N, known as “Lord Cobarde,” has been declared guilty by the Ninth Specialized Criminal Court for the aggravated assault of Roberto González, an attack that left the victim in a wheelchair with lasting health complications.
Judicial Confirmation of Guilt
The First Collegiate Court of Circuit in Cancún confirmed the verdict, rejecting an appeal for legal protection filed by María Fernanda’s defense team. The court ruled that her legal status had shifted from accused to convicted, rendering further appeals moot.
“A definitive sentence was issued in administrative case file 11/2019, determining that the defendant (…) is criminally responsible for committing the crime of aggravated assault,” states the unambiguous ruling in the amparo review 229/2024.
Parallel Sentencing with Lord Cobarde
María Fernanda’s conviction follows that of her husband, Rodrigo N, who was sentenced in September of last year to 10 years in prison for the same crime by a Playa del Carmen trial court.
Initially, María Fernanda sought legal protection against a 2020 indictment. Despite multiple appeals and amparo petitions, the charges were upheld, allowing the criminal proceedings to proceed. Her legal team later petitioned the First Collegiate Court to dismiss the charges, but the court closed the case after her sentencing, citing no further legal recourse.
Eight-Year Wait for Justice
Roberto González endured an eight-year legal battle before securing a verdict. The assault occurred in January 2017 in the La Joya neighborhood, escalating from a neighborhood dispute into a violent beating allegedly carried out by María Fernanda and Lord Cobarde, according to González’s testimony. The attack left him permanently disabled, with no full recovery achieved to date.
The case underscores the prolonged judicial process faced by victims of violent crimes in Mexico.
