CANCÚN — The final week of August was marked by a wave of intentional homicides in Quintana Roo, with at least nine victims across different municipalities in the state, the majority in Benito Juárez. The incidents, which include executions, discoveries of bodies in a state of decomposition, and violent attacks, reflect the persistent level of insecurity in the region.
On Monday, a truck driver was murdered inside his unit while parked on the bypass to the Cancún-Mérida highway in Benito Juárez.
On Tuesday, a human skeleton was located in a green area in Cancún's supermanzana 260. That same day, a 23-year-old man died at the General Hospital after being beaten and injured in the Tres Reyes neighborhood.
The most violent day was recorded on Wednesday: a man was executed by gunfire on Avenida Tulum, near supermanzana 23, while that night another individual lost his life after being stabbed in supermanzana 67.
In Felipe Carrillo Puerto, near the town of Chumpón, two bodies in a state of putrefaction were found inside the trunk of an abandoned vehicle.
On Friday, in Cancún, a bagged body was discovered in a green area next to the Ramal Norte highway.
Finally, on Saturday, in Isla Mujeres, a woman died in the La Gloria neighborhood under circumstances that have not yet been clarified.
With these events, the close of August left a violent toll that has again raised alarms about the security crisis in Quintana Roo, where homicidal violence shows no sign of relenting and impacts both tourist destinations and rural communities.
