Xul-Ha, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Othón P. Blanco is finalizing preparations for the second edition of Verano Xul-Ha 2026, a three-day sports and recreation event aimed at boosting tourism, fostering community ties, and generating economic benefits for the southern Quintana Roo community and its surroundings.
Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández confirmed that activities are scheduled for July 31, August 1, and August 2.
“We are full steam ahead. We are well organized, and in the coming days we will release the rest of the information. We want to invite everyone to join us because it is a very emotional event, full of passion, and worth experiencing even if you don’t compete directly,” she said.
The mayor emphasized that the event aims not only to provide sports and recreational activities but also to stimulate Xul-Ha’s economy by attracting visitors over the weekend. The strategy also seeks to benefit nearby communities by encouraging spending at local businesses, restaurants, and service providers.
“We are looking for surrounding communities to also benefit from these projects. We will continue working on this type of action to strengthen the local economy,” she added.
The call is open to teams of 20 to 30 participants, with a requirement for gender parity. They will compete in various sports, recreational, and skill-based challenges, including dance, soccer, relay races, tug-of-war, volleyball, knowledge tests, and kayak competitions — all designed to promote teamwork and camaraderie.
A total prize pool of 100,000 pesos (about $5,500 USD) will be awarded to the top three teams: 50,000 pesos for first place, 30,000 for second, and 20,000 for third.
Municipal authorities said the full program, including schedules, venues, and registration details, will be announced in the coming days.
Following the success of the first edition, the Othón P. Blanco city council expects higher participation and visitor turnout, aiming to establish Verano Xul-Ha as one of the premier summer recreational events in southern Quintana Roo and a platform to promote the area’s natural attractions, including the Xul-Ha Lagoon and its growing tourism offerings.
