Maya Train Start Date Uncertainty Impacting Local Businesses

The much-anticipated benefits of the Maya Train have yet to materialize in the state capital. The project continues to cause issues, particularly for small and micro-business owners who are struggling to generate income. Sales remain low, and the limited funds they do make are primarily used to cover household expenses, rent, and basic services for their businesses. This ongoing situation is causing significant hardship within this sector.

The hope was that the Maya Train would begin operations soon, stimulating tourism and bolstering the local economy. However, there is currently no confirmed start date for the service, particularly as construction continues in the southern region. This uncertainty was confirmed by César Antonio Luit, the Secretary-General of the Union of Merchants and Service Providers.

Despite the challenges, small business owners remain hopeful for the partially launched project. However, the train has already caused issues such as traffic congestion in and out of the city, without providing any tangible benefits so far. There is optimism that the promise of economic diversification will be realized next year.

Several areas in the city require improvement to attract investment. Current conditions include streets filled with potholes, a lack of public lighting, and overgrown medians. These factors, coupled with a lack of job opportunities and rising living costs, are having a significant impact.

There is also a call for increased promotion of the southern region's natural attractions. The aim is to encourage travelers to see beyond Bacalar as the only destination in this part of the state, and not to view Chetumal merely as a transit city to Belize. By enticing visitors to stay longer, it is hoped they will contribute to the local economy.
