Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Authorities recovered the bodies of two men in an advanced state of decomposition on Monday afternoon along the federal highway connecting Puerto Morelos and Cancun, officials said.
Police received a report around 4:30 p.m. via the 911 emergency line. Officers from the Municipal Police, National Guard, and Mexican Navy searched the area between the Los Tres Pinos ranch and the Royalton hotel before confirming the discovery. The State Prosecutor’s Office was called to the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate one victim was wearing a black shirt and pants, while the other wore white shorts. Both had apparent gunshot wounds, and given the level of decomposition, authorities believe they had been dead for at least two days.
Investigators and forensic experts processed the scene and removed the bodies, which were taken to the Cancun Forensic Medical Service for autopsies and further investigation.
Officials noted that there are no surveillance cameras on that stretch of highway, so the investigation will rely on other evidence to identify the perpetrators. The victims remain unidentified. The prosecutor’s office will cross-reference missing persons reports and databases to determine if either victim had been reported missing.
