The National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) has applied for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to prepare a 14.5-hectare site in Tulum. The plan is to extract quarry stone from this site for use in the construction of the Mayan Train.
The proposal, filed with the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), involves changing the land use of forest areas within the Quintana Roo municipality. The extracted quarry stone will be used to build roads, embankments, and the subgrade that will support the track of Section 6 of the Mayan Train.
The Mayan Train's section, stretching over 250 kilometers from Tulum to Bacalar in the southern part of Quintana Roo state, was assigned to the Army in 2020. This section is considered one of the most challenging segments of the entire project.
The proposed change in land use in forest areas is necessary to access the quarry stone reserves required for the Mayan Train mega project. The project's estimated investment is 15 million pesos, with 10% of this budget set aside for environmental impact mitigation measures.
