Tulum Launches Heartfelt Initiative for Children with Cancer

A group of people, including two in mascot costumes, stands in front of the Tulum municipal building in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The building has "TULUM Q. ROO" on its facade. A banner in the background features logos from various sponsors including DIF and Banco de Alimentos.

In a display of community solidarity, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo spearheaded the launch of Tulum's first "cap heart". This initiative, championed by the Municipal DIF System and led by his wife, Paulina Quiroga de Castañón, aims to support children and young people battling cancer. The launch event took place in front of the Municipal Palace, where a heart-shaped container was set up to collect plastic caps. These caps will later be donated to non-profit organizations like Banco de Tapitas, known for using these resources to fund treatments such as chemotherapy for children.

Claudia Alejandra Muñoz, representing the honorary president of DIF Tulum, emphasized that this initiative unites the community around a worthy cause. "Donating plastic caps, often discarded, now offers a beacon of hope to those facing challenging times," she stated.

Muñoz underlined that this collective effort between the community, government, and private sector provides a significant opportunity to enhance support and directly impact the lives of those most in need. "The heart installed today should symbolize the commitment of everyone in this municipality," she added.

During his address, Mayor Diego Castañón highlighted that for every thousand caps collected, one chemotherapy treatment can be donated. This makes the initiative a tangible tool for saving lives. "This is for individuals who lack the resources to access treatment. It's a priceless act that should be carried out with full sincerity," he expressed.

The Mayor extended his gratitude to the municipal DIF, his wife Paulina Quiroga, and the citizens present for supporting this cause. He urged everyone to keep the container filled daily as a testament to community empathy and commitment. "Every little bit counts. In Tulum, transformation is also social, and promoting such initiatives strengthens us as a municipality," he concluded.
