In the early hours of Wednesday, July 17, a devastating fire engulfed three businesses in Tulum's coastal area. The affected establishments were El Gitano restaurant, Spicy Hookah bar, and a boutique shop. These businesses are located at the 7th kilometer mark on the Tulum-Boca Paila highway. The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m., with worried onlookers quickly alerting 911, leading to emergency teams rushing to the scene.
The local Fire Department responded promptly, sending out units to control the fire that was threatening to spread to other nearby buildings, also constructed from local materials. The firefighters' relentless efforts successfully extinguished the fire. However, this required a temporary closure of road traffic in the area as a safety precaution.
Although the fire was substantial, only material damage was reported, estimated to be in the thousands of pesos. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and have not yet released any official statements.
This incident underscores the vulnerability of the local palapas to fire, highlighting the need for preventive measures and safety protocols in the area.
