Tulum Archaeological Site Sees Sharp Drop in Tourist Numbers

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Tourist visits to the Tulum archaeological site dropped significantly in early 2026, with numbers falling more than 30% compared to the same period last year, according to official data.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) reported that between January and March 2026, the site recorded just over 257,000 visitors. This represents a substantial decline from the more than 385,000 tourists who visited during the first three months of 2025.

The decrease continues a weak performance observed throughout 2025, when the archaeological complex closed the year with just over one million visitors. This marks one of the site’s lowest annual totals in more than a decade, only surpassing periods affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several factors have contributed to this downward trend. Changes to access at Tulum National Park following federal intervention have resulted in new fees and restrictions for entering certain areas, generating dissatisfaction among visitors and residents.

Additionally, complaints persist about high prices for tourist services including transportation, food, and accommodation. Conflicting regulations at public beaches have also drawn criticism — while free access is promoted, personal items are restricted, encouraging spending at commercial establishments instead.

The decline in visitor numbers is beginning to affect hotel occupancy rates and the destination’s overall international reputation. Tourism industry representatives have urged authorities to strengthen promotional strategies to restore traveler confidence.

The challenge for officials and business owners will be reversing this negative trend at a critical moment for Tulum, whose economy depends heavily on tourism.
