Bacalar’s Public Pier in Critical Condition, Poses Risk to Residents and Tourists

A decaying wooden pier in Bacalar, Quintana Roo, with visible rot and holes in the structure

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A public pier that should serve as a safe gateway to one of the state’s most iconic destinations has become an evident hazard. The pier located at Avenida 1 and Calle 16 shows critical deterioration that endangers residents and tourists, with no concrete intervention from authorities to date.

Rotted planks, visible holes, and a weakened structure highlight years of neglect at this key access point to Bacalar Lagoon. Despite repeated citizen complaints, the problem not only persists but worsens over time.

The situation is particularly serious given the constant flow of people using this pier, many of them visitors unaware of the structure’s actual condition. The lack of warning signs or access restrictions increases the risk of accidents, leaving users’ safety to chance.

Tourism Without Maintenance

While Bacalar is promoted as a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Town) in official campaigns, basic infrastructure shows signs of abandonment. The contradiction is evident: authorities invest in attracting tourists but not in ensuring safe conditions to receive them.

The inevitable question arises: Where are the resources allocated for maintaining public spaces? Institutional omission reflects not only disinterest but a concerning lack of responsibility in a destination whose economy depends directly on tourism.

Ignored Complaints

Municipal residents claim they have reported the pier’s deterioration multiple times without receiving a response. This recurrence demonstrates reactive—or nonexistent—management of problems that, far from being minor, represent a direct risk to people’s physical integrity.

Latent Risk

The Calle 16 pier is not just a damaged structure; it’s an accident waiting to happen. Each day without intervention increases the probability of an incident that could have been prevented.

In Bacalar, the gap between the tourist image and daily reality continues to grow. And while authorities remain silent, the deterioration advances—and so does the risk.
