Quintana Roo, Mexico — Beginning in November of this year, passengers purchasing a ticket for the Tren Maya to any destination will be offered a 100 percent discount on their return trip. The initiative is part of a strategy to increase passenger traffic during the high season at the end of the year.
Germán Redondo Suárez, head of Corporate and Commercial Strategy for the Tren Maya, detailed that the program is part of a strategy where passengers buy the outbound ticket and the return ticket is free, with the goal of increasing the flow of visitors. He stated that the first time the program was launched, it resulted in an 80 percent increase in ridership. "I hope we do better this season," he added.
"This will be the second time this promotion is launched, after it was implemented with great success among users during the summer of this same year," Redondo Suárez said.
After nearly two years of operation, the Cancún-Mérida route remains the most successful in the entire circuit, followed by the Cancún-Playa del Carmen route, the executive added.
Operational Statistics Show Significant Growth
Regarding operational statistics, the Tren Maya has transported more than 1.3 million passengers as of July 2025. This figure reflects a significant increase in the number of daily passengers between August and December of 2024.
The data represents a monthly average of 68,780 passengers and growth of 169 percent compared to the previous year. This has resulted in the railway reaching 50 percent of its goal to transport 1.2 million passengers in the current year.
In terms of daily averages, 1,905 passengers per day were recorded in 2024, while that number rose to 3,320 users in 2025. This reflects a 74 percent increase in the average daily demand.
Furthermore, during the 2025 Easter holiday season, the previous single-day passenger record of 6,422 passengers set on December 29, 2024, was surpassed. A new record of 6,641 passengers was reached on April 20, 2025.
During the summer of 2025, more than 125,000 passengers were transported. This exceeded the Easter holiday season by more than 9.4 percent. Consequently, the Tren Maya increased its daily commercial services from 14 to 18 on the three main routes with the highest demand: Mérida–Cancún, Cancún–Mérida, and Cancún–Playa del Carmen.
Expanded Services and Future Initiatives
Redondo Suárez also reported that with the 34 stations now operating at 100 percent capacity, visitors can find a wide range of services, including car rentals, convenience stores, restaurants, handicraft shops, travel agencies, and jewelry stores, among others.
He advanced that the launch of special fares on Section 7, which runs from Chetumal to Escárcega, for workers and other local populations is already under analysis. The objective is for the Tren Maya to fulfill its role of facilitating mobility for low-income residents.
