Cozumel, Mexico — A tourist boat capsized off the coast of Cozumel near the restaurant “Alberto’s,” creating moments of tension among passengers. Crews from other nautical service providers rescued and assisted the tourists.
The incident occurred when the boat was navigating with approximately 30 people on board.
According to testimony from some rescued tourists, the vessel was traveling at high speed when a wave struck it from the side, causing it to lose stability and ultimately capsize.
After the accident, passengers fell into the sea and were assisted by personnel from other boats operating in the area, whose crews acted in solidarity to prevent more serious consequences.
As of the closing of this edition, no serious injuries had been reported, although several occupants experienced nervous crises and minor bruises resulting from the incident.
The tourists were brought to safety and transported to secure locations, while maritime authorities were notified for appropriate follow-up.
This event occurs just days after authorities from the Port Captaincy issued a preventive notice to nautical service providers, urging them to take extreme precautions, respect speed limits, not exceed the authorized capacity of vessels, and comply with restrictions resulting from sea conditions.
Previously, maritime authorities reiterated that during periods of high tourist influx, risks at sea increase, especially when safety protocols are not respected, which can lead to accidents that endanger the lives of tourists and crews.
Nautical service providers noted that while the solidarity response prevented a tragedy, it is essential to strengthen supervision and for companies and operators to assume their responsibility to guarantee safe transportation.
They agreed that prevention and compliance with regulations are key to avoiding this type of incident and protecting Cozumel’s tourist image.
It is expected that maritime authorities will conduct investigations to determine responsibilities and verify whether the vessel complied with established permits, capacity, and safety measures.
