Tour Boat Sinks Off Cozumel, Apparent Overcrowding Blamed

A partially submerged tourist boat named Tea off the coast of Cozumel, with nearby vessels assisting in rescue efforts.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A tourist excursion boat named “Tea” sank off the coast of Cozumel on Monday afternoon, with authorities citing apparent overcrowding as the likely cause.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. near the Occidental Hotel, according to unofficial reports. Other vessels in the area rushed to assist, helping rescue passengers from the sinking boat.

Officials from the Harbor Master’s Office arrived at the scene to assess the situation and coordinate the recovery of the vessel, which was towed to shore.

As of Monday evening, authorities had not reported any injuries. The Harbor Master’s Office urged tour boat operators to comply with capacity regulations to prevent similar accidents.
