Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Taxi Union has strongly condemned a violent attack on one of its drivers in downtown Playa del Carmen, where a motorist chased and assaulted a taxi operator with a machete after being confronted for being mistaken as a digital platform driver.
According to reports, the assailant arrived in a private vehicle and attacked the taxi driver, pursuing and beating him in an incident that alarmed bystanders and was captured on video circulating on social media.

In an official statement, the union described the events as serious and suggested they could constitute an alleged attempted homicide, expressing its rejection of any act of violence against its operators.
“The integrity of our taxi family is a priority,” the organization emphasized, adding that it will closely monitor the case and investigate the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
The union also announced it will file a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities to determine responsibility and ensure there is no impunity.
The incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between taxi drivers and digital platform operators in the tourist destination, a situation that has previously led to public confrontations.
