Cancún, Quintana Roo — State investigators have arrested a man suspected of taking part in the kidnapping of two men in Cancún more than 13 years ago, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office said.

Flavio Alfonso, 33, a native of Nayarit, was detained on suspicion of involvement in the January 2013 abductions of Carlos Tonatiuh and Ismael de Jesús. Officers from the State Investigation Police served an arrest warrant against him on kidnapping charges.

According to the investigation, the victims were at a nightclub near Parque de Las Palapas on Jan. 17, 2013, when Flavio Alfonso arrived with a group of other men who allegedly forced both men out of the venue.

The kidnappers covered the victims’ heads and drove them in a taxi to a home in Región 95, where they were tied by their hands and feet.

Investigators allege that Flavio Alfonso stood guard over the two men while the others pressed them for contact details of their relatives and demanded 100,000 pesos for their release.

During the operation to arrest him, investigators seized suspected drugs, a vehicle and two cellphones.

The Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect has been placed under prosecution before a control judge.
