Survey: Nearly 9 in 10 Foreign Residents Feel Safe in Mexico

Foreign residents in Mexico feel safe according to survey

Mexico City — Nearly 9 out of 10 foreign residents in Mexico say they feel safe in the country, according to a survey by Mexico Daily News, challenging the negative security narrative often portrayed abroad.

The study, based on responses from 773 foreign residents across 29 states, found that 88.97% feel very safe in Mexico. Additionally, 63.71% consider Mexico safer than their country of origin, and 4 out of 5 reported not having been victims of any crime in the past year.

Among those who did experience crime, the most common incidents were minor thefts, such as stolen cellphones or wallets.

Mexico’s appeal extends beyond safety. Foreign residents cited quality of life, culture, gastronomy, and landscapes as key attractions. Cities like Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende, Guadalajara, and Mazatlán have become hubs for this growing community, many of whom work remotely.

Despite the positive perception, the survey identified areas for improvement. Police performance received an average rating, indicating that while overall experience is favorable, law enforcement effectiveness could be strengthened.

The findings highlight a contrast between international perceptions of insecurity and the daily reality of those living in Mexico.
