Quintana Roo, Mexico — Business leaders in southern Quintana Roo have welcomed the launch of La Gran Escapada, a program spearheaded by the Federal Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), as a key tool to increase occupancy rates and sales in the region. The initiative, designed to stimulate domestic tourism, aims to attract more visitors to emerging destinations across Mexico, particularly in less-developed areas like southern Quintana Roo, while generating greater economic benefits for local tourism-related businesses.
A Push for Off-Season Travel
According to the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco Servytur) in the state, more than 500 businesses—including airlines—have already joined the project, offering special discounts on flights, lodging, travel packages, and experiences to encourage domestic travel.
Omar Govea Hernández, the state’s Deputy Tourism Secretary, explained that La Gran Escapada, scheduled for May 30 to June 1, 2025, follows a model similar to the Buen Fin shopping event but focuses on the tourism sector. The goal is to achieve up to 90% occupancy, even outside peak season.
“This strategy seeks to incentivize domestic tourism, attract more visitors, and ensure both emerging and established destinations benefit,” Govea stated. He also revealed that discussions are underway with airlines and Maya Train authorities to integrate their services into the program’s promotions.
Leveling the Playing Field
Amir Padilla Espadas, President of Canaco Servytur Chetumal, described La Gran Escapada as a crucial tool for revitalizing southern Quintana Roo’s economy.
“We need initiatives that bring Mexicans closer to their own destinations and allow tourism service providers in the south to compete on equal footing,” Padilla said.
The program was officially unveiled during the 2025 Tianguis Turístico, which concluded on May 1, and has been met with enthusiasm by various sectors of the national tourism industry.
