Cancún, Mexico — At least two sharks were captured swimming a short distance from the shore at Playa Forum, one of the most crowded points in Cancún’s hotel zone, in an incident that was recorded on video and quickly went viral on social media, causing reactions from tourists and swimmers.
The material was shared by TikTok user @mauquintanilla4, who managed to document the exact moment when the sharks were moving in shallow waters, just a few meters from people who were enjoying the sea.
In the images, the sharks can be seen swimming with apparent calm, while several visitors notice their presence and begin to react nervously.
The proximity of the marine animals amazed children and adults, since Playa Forum is known for its high daily attendance. Faced with the evident risk, several swimmers chose to leave the water hastily, while others watched with concern from the shore.
According to testimonies shared on social media, no attacks or injured people were reported. Even so, the sighting revived the debate about the presence of sharks on Cancún’s coasts, a phenomenon that, according to specialists, may be related to changes in water temperature, ocean currents, and the availability of food near the coast.
Authorities and marine life experts have pointed out on previous occasions that the presence of sharks is not necessarily synonymous with danger, although they recommend staying calm, avoiding swimming in dispersed groups, and following lifeguards’ instructions.
