Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Residents and business owners in the Puerto Maya neighborhood are demanding action after raw sewage began overflowing onto public streets, creating what they describe as a serious health hazard.
The spill is located on Calzada Puerto Maya Avenue, just meters from the area’s main commercial district. The overflowing sewage not only produces foul odors and creates an unsightly scene but also represents a significant infection risk for families and customers who pass through daily.
According to residents of this densely populated settlement, the problem stems from the concessionaire Aguakan’s failure to properly maintain and clean the drainage system. The sewers, clogged with waste, have lost their absorption capacity, causing wastewater to constantly bubble up onto the pavement.
Concern is mounting as the rainy season approaches. Residents warn that without immediate cleaning of the drains, the situation could become catastrophic, potentially causing floods of contaminated water that would endanger public health for thousands of people.
Community members are calling on municipal and state authorities to intervene and demand that Aguakan fulfill its maintenance responsibilities before the situation escalates into a major public health emergency in the heart of Puerto Aventuras.
