Seña Fest to Bring Mexican Sign Language Events to Playa del Carmen on Sept. 26

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Seña Fest, a one-day event dedicated to Mexican Sign Language, will be held on Sept. 26 at the amphitheater of Plaza 28 de Julio, city officials and deaf community organizations announced at a press conference.

The festival is designed to promote inclusion and expand access to communication by teaching and raising the profile of Mexican Sign Language (LSM). The municipal government organized the announcement together with civil society groups and representatives of the deaf community.

Workshops, Performances and Awareness Activities

Organizers said the program combines workshops, cultural and artistic performances, community gathering and awareness-building exercises. Attendees will be able to learn basic expressions, greetings and the LSM alphabet, along with other activities aimed at bringing this form of communication closer to the general public.

Lizandro Echeverría, operational director of the Municipal Youth Institute (IMJ), described the event as a joint effort to create spaces where deaf people take the leading role and the hearing community can approach Mexican Sign Language.

María del Pilar Severiano Téllez, director of the civil association Microtia Quintana Roo, said Seña Fest was created to make Mexican Sign Language visible and to strengthen recognition of the rights of people with hearing disabilities.

Local Artists Join the Lineup

Gabo Marcel, artistic director of the organizations Darte Conciencia and Light On, said local performers taking part include Tommy Camil, the Ballet de Idón and APA de Cir Cósmico, as well as Edwin Andrés, who will give a freestyle soccer demonstration. Additional activities and surprises are planned for the audience.

Alan Santos, a member of Microtia Quintana Roo, said the gathering is open to the public.
