Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A serious car accident recorded on the morning of Saturday, January 17 on the Playa del Carmen-Cancún highway section resulted in one fatality and two more injured, following a dramatic rollover that occurred near the Puerto Morelos bridge.
According to initial reports, the incident was reported to emergency number 911 around 10:40 a.m. Upon arriving at the site, emergency crews confirmed that a private vehicle had lost control and ended up completely overturned in the median, heading from Playa del Carmen toward Puerto Morelos.
Preliminarily, it was reported that at least three people were traveling in the vehicle. Two of them sustained significant injuries and were urgently transported to a hospital in Playa del Carmen, where they are reported to be under medical care. The third person died at the accident scene, with their identity not officially confirmed at this time.
At the accident site, National Guard elements implemented a flagging operation to allow controlled circulation of vehicles traveling from Playa del Carmen toward Cancún, while municipal authorities from Puerto Morelos provided support in security and traffic assistance tasks.
The causes of the accident have not yet been determined. A possible mechanical failure or the involvement of a second vehicle that may have caused the rollover and subsequently fled is not ruled out. This version will be analyzed as part of the investigations being conducted by the competent authorities.
Unofficially, it emerged that the deceased person would be a woman and allegedly the wife of the deputy director of Civil Protection of Playa del Carmen; however, this information has not been confirmed by the authorities.
An official statement is expected to be issued in the coming hours to clarify the circumstances of the accident, confirm the identity of the victim, and determine responsibilities. Meanwhile, authorities reiterated the call to exercise extreme caution when traveling on this highway section.
