Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Belize Consulate in Chetumal announced that the Rio Hondo International Bridge will be fully closed from May 1 to August 31 for reconstruction work, urging travelers to plan ahead.
Consul José Luis Kelly said the closure is part of a project coordinated by Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation through its Quintana Roo center.
Alternate Crossing
During the closure, immigration and customs services will move to the Chac-Temal International Bridge, where routine procedures will continue, including:
- Issuance of Regional Visitor Cards
- Vehicle inspections
- Immigration control
National Guard personnel will be present at the alternate crossing to reinforce security.
Bridge Work
The reconstruction project includes:
- Rehabilitation of the metal structure
- Construction of a concrete slab and pedestrian walkway
- Installation of parapets and sidewalks
- Work on piles, pile caps, and access ramps
- Road signage
Authorities advised people traveling between Mexico and Belize to allow extra travel time and use the alternate crossing during the closure period.
