Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Belize Consulate in Chetumal announced that the Rio Hondo International Bridge will be fully closed from May 1 to August 31 for reconstruction work, urging travelers to plan ahead.

Consul José Luis Kelly said the closure is part of a project coordinated by Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation through its Quintana Roo center.

Alternate Crossing

During the closure, immigration and customs services will move to the Chac-Temal International Bridge, where routine procedures will continue, including:

  • Issuance of Regional Visitor Cards
  • Vehicle inspections
  • Immigration control

National Guard personnel will be present at the alternate crossing to reinforce security.

Bridge Work

The reconstruction project includes:

  • Rehabilitation of the metal structure
  • Construction of a concrete slab and pedestrian walkway
  • Installation of parapets and sidewalks
  • Work on piles, pile caps, and access ramps
  • Road signage

Authorities advised people traveling between Mexico and Belize to allow extra travel time and use the alternate crossing during the closure period.
