Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Nieves, a white-furred domestic cat widely known and loved by residents of the Miraflores neighborhood in Chetumal, suffered a fractured jaw and nose in what has been described as a deliberate attack.
Angélica Rojas, the cat’s owner, publicly denounced the incident, calling the assault on the feline an act of barbarism and a lack of conscience on the part of the perpetrator.
Rojas recounted that during the afternoon of the previous day, the cat arrived at her home with deep bleeding on its face. She mentioned that although the cat spends most of its time sheltered at home, a moment of carelessness allowed it to escape.
Shocked by her pet’s condition, she took it to a veterinary clinic, where a specialist gave an initial diagnosis and explained that the injuries were caused by a kick to its face.
However, when seeking a second opinion from another specialist, the cat underwent an X-ray session. The X-ray revealed the worst: the pellet was far from its nasal passages, embedded in its bone system, which was deformed due to the impact caused by the pellet gun.
Meanwhile, the animal’s owner is in a state of desperation, as she needs a certain amount of money to proceed with the feline’s treatment. She is selling a large part of her belongings to save her faithful friend, who is scheduled for surgery on Monday.
At the same time, she is outraged by the events, angry and powerless, because she asserted that under no circumstances should an animal be harmed with such malice.
“It is not a ‘game’ nor a prank, it is an act of violence that causes pain, suffering and can end the life of a pet,” she expressed with great sadness.
While the feline remains at rest and under specialized veterinary care before being operated on, Rojas declared that she does not yet know who is responsible. She has been advised to review the recordings from the corresponding security cameras to identify the culprit.
Furthermore, she stated that she will soon file a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), as she will not let the act go unpunished.
In relation to this, neighbors in the colony have expressed their disgust with the crime, assuring that the cat was completely peaceful and did not cause any harm to anyone.
Some residents indicated that the author of the crime could be a middle-aged adult who has been seen throwing stones at dogs and cats he finds on the street, although this remains only a rumor for now.
