Cancun, Quintana Roo — Reports of conflicts involving foreign nationals in downtown Cancun have increased, raising concerns among residents and business owners about a deteriorating security situation.
According to recent data, dozens of Cuban nationals have been detected in irregular immigration status in 2026, adding to a trend already identified the previous year with even higher numbers.
Witness accounts and official reports suggest some of these individuals are linked to illicit activities ranging from public order disturbances to more serious crimes, fueling anxiety among locals and merchants in the area.
The issue is not isolated. In Cancun, about 15% of people detained for administrative offenses are foreign nationals, reflecting a consistent foreign presence in incidents across the city.
Neighborhood conflicts have also highlighted the involvement of people from other countries, accounting for roughly 10% of complaints handled, which has strained coexistence in some neighborhoods.
Residents of the city center describe an increase in everyday risks, with violence and uncertainty becoming part of daily life, especially at night.
While most newcomers arrive seeking opportunities, the cases linked to criminal behavior have been enough to put the issue in the public spotlight, feeding a growing perception of insecurity among the population.
