Cancún’s Abandoned Hospital to Become Maternal Health Center

Structure of the new maternal and child hospital in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa of Quintana Roo and the director general of IMSS-Bienestar, Alejandro Svarch, have announced the recovery of the former Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital for the construction of the new Maternal and Child Hospital of Cancún. This strategic project will strengthen medical care for mothers, girls, and boys in the northern part of the state.

The building, inaugurated in 1980 and out of operation since 2017 after the opening of the new General Hospital, had remained abandoned. It will now be transformed into a modern hospital center that will serve more than 620,000 inhabitants of Cancún and surrounding areas.

Recovery of a Historic Hospital in Cancún

During a tour of the facilities, Mara Lezama welcomed the head of IMSS-Bienestar and presented the project that will give new life to the old hospital.

“I am very pleased to receive Dr. Alejandro Svarch, director general of IMSS-Bienestar. Together we are touring the facilities of the former Jesús Kumate General Hospital in Cancún to present the project for the new Maternal and Child Hospital,” expressed the governor.

The state leader emphasized that this work will reduce transfers, decongest other hospitals, and substantially improve the quality of medical care, in accordance with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo and under a vision of humanist government with a feminist heart.

This Will Be the New Maternal and Child Hospital of Cancún

For his part, Alejandro Svarch explained that the project contemplates the construction of a three-level hospital, with more than 11,000 square meters of building, on a surface area exceeding 9,700 square meters.

The new hospital will have:

  • Seven consultation rooms
  • 40 censable beds and 64 non-censable beds
  • Three operating rooms
  • Intensive care area
  • Laboratory
  • X-ray with fluoroscopy
  • Mammography and ultrasound
  • General services such as kitchen, warehouse, and laundry
  • Teaching area with multipurpose room and auditorium

These characteristics will allow for specialized care in maternal and child health, with modern equipment and adequate spaces for medical training.

Health as a Right, Not a Privilege in Quintana Roo

The director general of IMSS-Bienestar stressed that the coordinated work between the Government of Mexico and the Government of Quintana Roo is advancing toward a more just and inclusive health system.

He indicated that this type of project consolidates the objective that medical care ceases to be a privilege and is guaranteed as a right for all Quintana Roo residents, especially for the most vulnerable sectors.

The tour also included the state Secretary of Health, Flavio Carlos Rosado; the honorary president of DIF Quintana Roo, Verónica Lezama Espinosa; Senator Eugenio Segura; and Moisés Toledo Pensamiento, director of IMSS-Bienestar in Quintana Roo.

With this announcement, the new Maternal and Child Hospital of Cancún is shaping up to be one of the most relevant health works for northern Quintana Roo, by strengthening medical infrastructure and guaranteeing dignified and timely care for mothers, girls, and boys.
