Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office Reveals Cause of Death for Child Who Died at Cancún Elementary School

Authorities investigate the death of a child at Isla Holbox elementary school in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a child who died at a Cancún elementary school on Monday suffered a fatal brain edema after being struck by a ball during play.

The tragic incident occurred around 4 p.m. on April 20 at Isla Holbox elementary school, located in the Villas Otoch neighborhood near a police academy. The boy, aged 9 or 10, was a fourth-grade student.

Preliminary reports indicate the child was playing with classmates on school grounds when a ball hit him in the head, causing him to trip and fall, striking his head again. He got up and tried to walk but collapsed moments later.

School staff called emergency services. Red Cross paramedics responded but pronounced the child dead at the scene after finding no vital signs.

The incident sparked distress among parents, who gathered outside the school. Some demanded to collect their children immediately, while others offered support to the boy’s mother and family, calling for clear information about what happened.

Authorities have been notified and are expected to release an official report detailing the circumstances of the incident in the coming hours.
