Cancún, Mexico — The Search Mothers Collective of Quintana Roo has publicly distanced itself from a blockade taking place on Xcaret Avenue, clarifying that the individual leading the protest is not affiliated with their organization. María Dolores Patrón Pat, the group’s president, made the announcement during a press conference, emphasizing that the collective does not support personal causes unrelated to documented cases of disappearances or abuse.
Collective Rejects Association with Protest
Patrón Pat stated that the Search Mothers Collective focuses exclusively on cases backed by official investigations, including disappearances, sexual abuse, and high-impact crimes affecting minors. “We have been wrongly linked to several road closures and demonstrations in Quintana Roo,” she said. “As president, I must clarify that the person leading the protest outside the State Prosecutor’s Office on Xcaret Avenue is not part of our collective.”
She further noted that other groups have attempted to associate themselves with the collective’s activism by participating in sit-ins and marches, often sharing photos on social media to falsely claim alignment with their cause.
Focus on Verified Cases
The president reiterated that the collective only supports cases involving disappearances, sexual violence, or crimes against children—not personal disputes that could undermine their mission. She also denied involvement in a separate blockade announced near Anáhuac University.
In response to criticism from feminist groups on social media, Patrón Pat clarified that the collective assists victims regardless of gender. Currently, they are supporting two cases involving missing men. “We do not defend aggressors—male or female,” she said. “We defend victims who can substantiate their cases with evidence, including psychological and forensic reports required by authorities.”
Background on the Blockade
The Xcaret Avenue protest is led by Elvia Anel Contreras, a local merchant demanding action from the State Prosecutor’s Office regarding her complaints against municipal officials for an alleged forced eviction. The road had been forcibly reopened by citizens after over 20 days of blockage but remains partially closed.
The Search Mothers Collective’s statement aims to preserve its credibility and redirect attention to its core mission of advocating for victims with verifiable cases.
