Cancún, Quintana Roo — Restaurants in Quintana Roo specializing in fish and seafood dishes expect sales to rise by 20 to 30 percent during the Lent season, which begins this Wednesday.

Perla Flores Navarro, president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) in Cancún, said the Lent period has always boosted sales, prompting businesses without this specialty to add seafood to their menus to capitalize on the seasonal surge.

She noted that establishments selling seafood dishes typically see the highest sales during Lent. However, limited economic resources constrain broader economic spillover.

Flores Navarro pointed out that while the tradition of abstaining from red meat on Lenten Fridays remains, it is no longer observed as intensely as in previous years.

For this reason, she estimated sales would increase by up to 30 percent, a figure that would have been higher in past eras.

She added that although the Church has relaxed some rules regarding meat consumption, a significant number of people still respect the practice, benefiting seafood-focused restaurants.

The main challenge for non-specialized restaurants will be maintaining sales rather than generating a spike, she emphasized.

Finally, the sector representative expressed hope that this period would provide economic relief for the industry after several slow seasons.

“We invite people to continue visiting restaurants that offer this special cuisine practically year-round. We will be ready to welcome them with offers and menus featuring gastronomic variety,” she concluded.
