QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — Quintana Roo has solidified its position as the state with the highest marriage rate in the country, according to the 2024 Marriage Statistics (EMAT) from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The state recorded 7.7 marriages per every thousand inhabitants aged 18 and over, surpassing Sinaloa (7.1) and Campeche (7.0). In contrast, Tlaxcala and Mexico City registered the lowest rate with 3.4 marriages per every thousand inhabitants, followed by Puebla with 3.6.
Marriages Involving Minors
The report indicates that Quintana Roo documented one of only seven cases in the entire country where one of the individuals entering marriage was a minor. Similar situations occurred in Michoacán, Chiapas, Durango, Nuevo León, and Sonora.
Low Divorce Rate in Quintana Roo
Although it leads in marriages, the state reported a divorce rate of 2.20 per every thousand inhabitants, a figure lower than the national average. Proportionally, Quintana Roo recorded 28.5 divorces for every 100 marriages, compared to the national average of 33.3, according to the 2024 Divorce Statistics (ED).
National Overview of Marriages and Divorces
Nationally, 486,645 marriages were celebrated in 2024, and 161,932 divorces were registered. Of the divorces, 89.6% were resolved through judicial means and 10.4% through administrative channels. The national marriage rate was 5.4 per every thousand inhabitants aged 18 and over, while the divorce rate reached 1.79, higher than the rate recorded in 2015 (1.52).
Average Age in Marriages and Divorces
The average age for marrying in 2024 was 32.1 years for women and 35 years for men. In the case of divorces, the average ages were 41.1 for women and 43.6 for men. For same-sex marriages, the average age was 34.7 years for women and 37.1 years for men, with a total of 6,312 such unions registered across the country.
Educational and Labor Factors in Unions
The statistics also reveal the influence of education on marriages: 80.5% of individuals entering marriage had at least a secondary education, and more than half (54%) married someone with the same educational level.
Regarding employment, 94.6% of men and 57.7% of women were working at the time of marriage. Among those who were not employed, the majority were dedicated to household work or were retired.
