Quintana Roo, Mexico — Authorities have launched the “Gran Abuela 2026” initiative to recognize women who have dedicated their lives to preserving Maya language, traditions, and cultural knowledge in the state.

The program aims to honor grandmothers and community figures who serve as pillars of regional identity, maintaining cultural heritage amid modernization. Organizers describe it as a symbolic recognition rather than a competition.

Candidate Profile

The initiative seeks women who represent the living heritage of their communities, with characteristics including:

  • Preservation of the Maya language through active use in family and social settings
  • Traditional knowledge in areas like ancestral medicine, embroidery, gastronomy, and oral tradition
  • Community leadership that guides younger generations
  • Life stories reflecting cultural resilience and continuity

Nomination Process

Anyone can nominate candidates through the official social media channels of Mundo Maya México by:

  • Sharing the nominee’s story or visual testimony
  • Explaining how she represents Maya cultural heritage

The submission deadline is April 24, 2026.

Cultural Preservation Goals

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to promote intangible cultural heritage in Quintana Roo, with objectives including:

  • Documenting community oral histories
  • Fostering intergenerational respect between youth and elders
  • Promoting cultural tourism by positioning the state as a destination that protects its roots

Organizers emphasized that the recognition brings visibility to stories often transmitted only orally. “There are women who, through their words, memory, and knowledge, keep the roots of the Maya World alive,” they stated. “It’s time for the world to know their stories.”

Authorities have encouraged public participation before the April 24 deadline to honor women fundamental to preserving cultural identity.
