Quintana Roo Governor Warns of Land Scam Targeting Residents in Akumal-Tulum Area

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama speaking at a press conference

Akumal-Tulum, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has issued a public warning about a suspected fraud scheme targeting residents in the Akumal-Tulum area, where individuals are being offered free land in exchange for cleaning properties.

During her weekly program “La Voz del Pueblo,” the governor explained that the scheme is being promoted through a social media profile called “Obra por Amor” (Work for Love), which invites families to participate in Sunday cleanup events with the promise of receiving a plot of land as compensation.

“Don’t let yourselves be deceived, it’s completely false,” Lezama emphasized.

No Legal Basis for Land Offers

The governor stated there is no legal basis for distributing land under these conditions, noting that such activities require specific permits that have not been obtained. She indicated that the page promoting the scheme presents itself as a religious community, but authorities do not know who is behind the initiative.

Lezama warned that this scheme could lead to various irregularities, including environmental damage and risks to participants’ safety.

Multi-Agency Investigation Launched

The state government announced it has initiated a coordinated investigation involving authorities from all three levels of government to determine responsibility and stop these practices.

Agencies participating in the investigation include:

  • The Quintana Roo State Strategic Projects Agency (AGEPRO)
  • The Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU)
  • The Quintana Roo Secretariat of Sustainable Territorial Urban Development (SEDETUS)
  • Local municipal authorities

Residents Urged to Verify Information

The governor urged residents not to be fooled and to verify any housing or land offers through official channels. She recommended consulting institutional housing access programs, including federal initiatives like the “Viviendas del Bienestar” (Well-being Housing) program promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Authorities reiterated that prevention and information are key to avoiding becoming victims of land acquisition fraud.
