Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — María José Osorio Rosas, a Quintana Roo state deputy known as Majo Osorio and a member of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), has drawn widespread criticism following a controversial statement during a local media interview in which she asserted that “breasts run the world.” The remark, deemed sexist and inappropriate for a public official, has ignited backlash on social media and political circles.

Outcry Over “Misogynistic” Comment

The comment was made during a live interview with journalist Alejandra Escobar on the Facebook channel Voz de Mujer Peninsular. Osorio participated in the interview as part of a media tour in Playa del Carmen, reportedly attempting to mitigate fallout from a prior controversy involving horses suffering heatstroke during a July 12 horseback procession honoring the Virgin of Carmen, which she led.

The remark came during a discussion on women’s empowerment and their growing role in politics. Activists, feminist groups, and citizens have condemned the statement as reinforcing sexist stereotypes that reduce women to sexual objects, undermining decades of gender equality efforts.

Feminist Groups Demand Accountability

The feminist collective Voces Unidas issued a sharp rebuke, stating, “These kinds of remarks perpetuate stereotypes that reduce women to sexual objects and trivialize the fight for gender equality.” They added, “What moves the world is not breasts, but organized, critical women committed to social transformation.”

Critics argue that as an elected official, Osorio should promote gender equality rather than reinforce patriarchal narratives. “This kind of rhetoric attacks the dignity of all women and reinforces the very structures we’ve fought to dismantle,” said social commentators.

Calls for Apology and Reflection

Civil society organizations and citizens have demanded a public apology and called on the PVEM to address the messaging of its representatives. Many emphasize that public figures, particularly those in legislative roles, must model responsible discourse, especially for younger generations.

The controversy underscores broader tensions over gender representation in Mexican politics, where activists continue pushing for institutional reforms to advance women’s rights.
