Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado has publicly condemned what she describes as coordinated attacks against the city’s youth through digital bot campaigns. In a strongly worded video shared on her social media platforms, Mercado accused anonymous online actors of spreading insults and misinformation in response to government-led initiatives benefiting young residents.
Allegations of Digital Harassment
Mercado stated, “Every action we take for the youth is met with insults and disinformation from the same digital bot networks.” She asserted that the attacks originate from groups that, when in power, “did nothing for Playa del Carmen or its people” and now resent seeing the city’s youth take center stage in local development.
Since taking office, Mercado’s administration has prioritized youth-focused policies, including a university transit route, free-access concerts, sports programs, and the revitalization of public spaces. “What bothers them is seeing that we are genuinely paying attention to our young people and delivering results, not empty promises,” she said.
Defiant Response and Public Support
The mayor reaffirmed her commitment to advancing youth initiatives despite the online backlash, declaring, “Let the bots keep attacking; we’ll keep working without all the noise.” Her message has garnered widespread support on social media, with thousands of citizens endorsing her efforts to empower Playa del Carmen’s younger population.
The controversy highlights growing tensions over digital disinformation campaigns targeting local governments in Mexico, particularly those implementing progressive social policies. Mercado’s administration remains focused on its youth agenda, framing the attacks as evidence of its effectiveness in driving change.
