Cancún, Mexico — The Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE), in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy and the National Guard, secured a property on the outskirts of the Alfredo V. Bonfil ejido on Saturday morning after confirming serious environmental damage.
The operation was carried out by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Environmental Crimes, Wildlife, and Urban Development. It was executed under a search warrant granted by a control judge due to possible crimes related to environmental damage and irregular urban development by a real estate developer.
During the operation, agents confirmed that the property had been subject to unauthorized land clearing, with roadways and access paths filled in and compacted with stony material. Furthermore, organic waste such as branches, logs, and grass, resulting from the clearing work, was found. These actions have caused evident environmental deterioration in an area of approximately 30,000 square meters, affecting the local flora, fauna, soil, and ecosystems.
The secured property was intended for the development of 477 residential lots, ranging between 814 and 2,000 square meters and distributed in three phases. These developments did not have the corresponding licenses issued by the authorities in matters of urban development and the environment. This situation represents a significant risk to the sustainability of the environment and highlights irregularities in compliance with environmental and urban planning regulations.
Following the execution of the search, agents meticulously documented evidence of the observed damage, which was integrated into the corresponding investigation file. Subsequently, securing seals were placed on the property, which now remains under the custody of the Social Representation while the legal situation of those responsible is determined and investigations into the environmental impact continue.
The FGE emphasized that this type of action is part of its institutional efforts to guarantee the protection of the environment, legality in urban development, and the prevention of damage to ecosystems in Benito Juárez and Quintana Roo. It reiterated that any real estate activity without the corresponding permits will be pursued in accordance with the law.
