Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo expects to close 2026 with high hotel occupancy and near the 20 million overnight tourists it recorded last year, boosted by favorable projections for the final quarter, state Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra said.
Cueto Riestra said the goal is to match last year’s figure, when, according to data he provided, the state received close to 20 million tourists who spent at least one night in the destination.
The Challenge Is Not Only More Tourists
The secretary said the overnight visitors were joined by roughly 8 million travelers who arrived through other categories, putting total traffic last year at about 28 million people.
Against that backdrop, he said the final quarter will be decisive for the state’s tourism performance in 2026. The industry’s focus is on sustaining high hotel occupancy and recovering visitor numbers during the last months of the year.
Cueto Riestra argued that the challenge for Quintana Roo is not simply to increase the number of tourists, but to make that growth orderly and sustainable and to ensure it benefits residents. Achieving that, he said, will require coordination among authorities, business leaders and the various sectors tied to tourism.
