Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Querétaro, a state recognized by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site and a Learning City, and lauded by UN-Habitat for its sustainability policies, has been selected as the inaugural guest state for the new cultural program México en Playa. The initiative is part of the municipal government’s transformative tourism model.
The announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday, May 14, where officials unveiled México en Playa, a program designed to diversify tourism offerings, bolster the local economy, and promote an inclusive "all included" vision.
Representing Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado, Municipal Tourism Secretary Estefanía Hernández introduced the program alongside Querétaro’s Secretary of Culture, Martha Daniela Salgado, and Playa del Carmen’s Director of the Institute of Culture and Arts, Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar.
“With México en Playa, the municipal government reaffirms its commitment to transforming tourism into an engine of shared prosperity, identity, and social justice for all,” emphasized Hernández.
A Week of Cultural Exchange
The Querétaro Cultural Week will take place from May 24 to 31 at the 28 de Julio plaza. Over seven days, the event will feature performances by musical groups such as Madera Viva, Korazound, Blues de la Conexión, and Borreón Huasteco, alongside theater productions, oral storytelling, art exhibitions, and displays of traditional crafts.
“México en Playa not only aims to enrich the visitor experience but also to strengthen the collective identity of the municipality. Playa del Carmen is now a multicultural window to the world, and this program opens its doors to exchange, connection, and pride in being Mexican,” stated Martínez Cuéllar.
The event marks the beginning of an annual agenda that will spotlight other states, including Oaxaca, Yucatán, Nuevo León, and Puebla, further establishing Playa del Carmen as a hub for cultural encounters and living art in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean.
