Power Outage Leaves Northwest Playa del Carmen in Darkness for Five Hours

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of several neighborhoods in northwestern Playa del Carmen endured more than five hours without electricity Monday night after a sudden power cut by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

The blackout began around 10 p.m., affecting the Misión de las Flores, Paseos de Xcacel, and Paseos de Sisal subdivisions, as well as the irregular settlement In House. Hundreds of families were left without power without warning, just as many were preparing for bed.

During the outage, homes were lit only by candles, flashlights, and dwindling cell phone batteries. The high heat drove many residents outside in search of cooler air, where they shared their frustration over recurring power failures.

On social media and WhatsApp groups, some residents threatened to block roads and burn tires to demand a permanent solution to the frequent blackouts in the area.

A CFE crew eventually arrived to work on a utility box on Avenida Sin Nombre, laboring for several hours to fix the fault. Power was restored shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday, but residents voiced anger over the repeated service interruptions.
