Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Portugal’s national soccer team began training in the Riviera Maya on Wednesday, holding their first session at the Mayakoba complex ahead of a friendly match against Mexico this weekend.
The team, led by manager Roberto Martínez, arrived in Cancún on Tuesday night and started preparations in Quintana Roo, solidifying the region as a strategic base for their international training.
During the initial session, the coaching staff prioritized physical exercises, mobility drills, and light tactical work to help players adjust after traveling from Europe. Training will continue on Thursday and Friday before the team moves to Toluca for final preparations ahead of the match against Mexico.
Portugal’s squad features high-level players from top European leagues, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Rúben Neves, and João Cancelo. Forward Paulinho, who currently plays for Toluca and is in good form in Mexican soccer, is also part of the roster.
Notably absent is Cristiano Ronaldo, who did not travel due to an injury and remains in recovery in Madrid.
Portugal’s training camp in Mayakoba reinforces Quintana Roo’s position as a strategic host for international teams ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Uruguay’s national team has also chosen the destination as a training base.
The Mexico-Portugal match has generated anticipation due to both teams’ caliber and the symbolic reopening of the Azteca Stadium, one of soccer’s most iconic venues. The friendly is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at 8:00 p.m. local time.
