Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A violent collision between a patrol unit from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and a taxi from the "Lázaro Cárdenas del Río" union left three people injured and caused significant material damage on Sunday morning in the CTM neighborhood, at the intersection with Lilis Avenue.
Preliminary Reports Point to Patrol’s Alleged Violation
According to initial accounts, the official patrol unit, marked with the number 82284, allegedly ran a red light without caution and struck the side of taxi number 2747, which had the right of way. The taxi driver was unable to brake in time, resulting in a violent crash with the patrol vehicle.
The impact left two taxi passengers injured, along with one police officer. The front of the taxi was completely destroyed, while the patrol car sustained severe damage to its right side. Civil Protection paramedics provided on-site medical attention before transporting the injured to a nearby hospital.
Witnesses Report Tension at the Scene
Eyewitnesses stated that the police officers appeared visibly upset after the accident, leading to heightened tension and complaints from bystanders. Traffic officers cordoned off the area and began forensic investigations to determine liability, including whether the patrol driver failed to stop at the red light.
Authorities Launch Investigations
As of now, the Secretariat of Citizen Security has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, traffic authorities have initiated administrative and legal proceedings to assign penalties and responsibilities.
