Tulum, Mexico — Edgar Aguilar Rico, the newly appointed Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPyPC) of Tulum, has taken decisive action in his first week in office by suspending traffic fines and halting the towing vehicle business, aiming to eradicate abuses and corruption within the department.

Immediate Measures Against Corruption

During a press briefing, Aguilar Rico announced, "As of today, no more vehicles will be impounded—except in cases of traffic accidents or when a car obstructs ramps for people with disabilities, speed bumps, or residential access, and only if requested by the affected party."

This measure severs ties with towing companies that had been charging exorbitant fees for vehicle removal and storage, a practice that had drawn widespread complaints from residents. "The exploitation of Tulum’s citizens is over," he warned.

Internal Restructuring and Accountability

The decision is part of a broader restructuring within the Traffic Department, including the rotation of leadership and a review of officers' conduct. Aguilar Rico emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption: "Not all officers are involved, but those who have abused their authority will be removed. We want a professional, respectful police force that serves the community."

Regarding the potential waiver of traffic fines, he clarified that exemptions would only be granted after a socioeconomic evaluation conducted directly by the department, eliminating discretionary or preferential treatment that had previously led to irregularities.

Commitment to Transparency

"We are restoring order. The people of Tulum deserve a trustworthy police force free from abuses. The media are my eyes and ears. Every citizen should know we are working for them with transparency and accountability," Aguilar Rico concluded.

These actions mark the new administration’s efforts to rebuild public trust and establish a fairer, more efficient security framework in the municipality.
