Taxi driver fired for threatening tourist in Playa del Carmen

A taxi driver in Playa del Carmen who threatened a foreign tourist has been permanently dismissed from his union

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union in Playa del Carmen has been permanently dismissed after threatening to have a foreign tourist jailed over a 200-peso fare dispute, union officials announced.

The Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (IMOVEQROO) previously suspended the driver’s activities and revoked his license following the incident. Union Secretary Luis Herrera Quiam confirmed the driver’s definitive removal from the union after an internal review process.

“The operator involved in the incident was separated and permanently dismissed from the union following an internal review process,” Herrera Quiam stated on his Facebook account.

He explained that the decision came after an analysis by the union’s Honor and Justice Commission, which handles reviews of driver conduct. The commission ruled for the driver’s separation, determining his behavior did not align with the organization’s principles of respect and responsibility.

Herrera Quiam emphasized that the union will not tolerate actions that undermine public trust or damage the union’s image, adding that they acted according to established internal procedures.

The union leader reiterated that the organization remains attentive and coordinated with relevant authorities, respecting any actions they determine regarding the case.

Following this incident, the union plans to strengthen training, monitoring, and certification efforts among drivers to promote more professional, safe, and respectful service for users and visitors.
