Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Playa del Carmen seized more than 30 kilograms of narcotics and arrested 22 people during a major Easter security operation that deployed hundreds of officers across the popular tourist destination.
The operation, led by the municipal government under Mayor Estefanía Mercado, targeted criminal networks operating during the peak tourist season. Officials described the drug seizure as a significant blow to distribution networks in the Riviera Maya.
“Our priority is and will always be the integrity of those who live in and visit Playa del Carmen,” the municipal administration said in a statement. “These results come from close coordination and an unwavering commitment to the law.”
Major Drug Interdiction
The 30-kilogram drug seizure represents the operation’s most significant achievement, according to the Public Security Department. Authorities said the volume suggests a major disruption to local drug trafficking operations that typically exploit the influx of tourists to beaches and nightlife areas.
Detection efforts included intensified checkpoints at the city’s northern and southern access points, foot patrols with canine units along Fifth Avenue and beach concession areas, and aerial surveillance that provided panoramic views of beaches and main thoroughfares.
Arrests and Vehicle Recovery
The 22 individuals arrested during the operation face charges including sexual abuse, assault, robbery with violence, and obstruction of justice. All have been turned over to the State Prosecutor’s Office.
Security personnel also recovered six stolen vehicles—five motorcycles and one car—using real-time data verification technology at security checkpoints.
Other crimes addressed during the operation included:
- Domestic violence and physical assaults
- Commercial and residential burglaries
- Sexual offenses and home invasions
- Use of false documents and resisting arrest
Unprecedented Security Deployment
The operation involved 385 security personnel working extended shifts, supported by 108 vehicles including intelligent patrol units and motorcycle patrols that could access difficult-to-reach areas.
The aerial support component, combined with canine units and technological infrastructure, created what officials described as a comprehensive security “shield” for areas with high tourist concentrations.
The municipal government emphasized that the strategy focused not just on reaction but on crime prevention through permanent surveillance at city access points and in vulnerable neighborhoods.
