Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen Municipal Public Security Department has equipped police officers with 424 body cameras to enhance supervision, transparency, and operational control through real-time monitoring from the city’s command center.

During a tour of the Center for Control, Command, Communication, and Computing (C4) on Thursday, Mayor Estefanía Mercado and Municipal Public Security Secretary Carlos Montesinos observed the system’s operation. They watched how footage from officers in the field can be monitored live from a central platform.

According to a technical briefing, 144 of the cameras feature remote connectivity, live streaming, and cloud storage, allowing command center staff to directly supervise officers deployed across the city. The remaining 280 devices record in high resolution with internal storage, expanding field documentation of police interventions, patrols, and actions.

The cameras were distributed primarily to units with the broadest territorial presence, including the Preventive Police, Traffic Police, and Tourist Police. Officials said this aims to increase supervision capacity in urban zones, main roadways, and visitor areas.

The C4 system enables real-time verification of protocol compliance during checks, detentions, or preventive interventions. It also generates audiovisual backup that can be used in internal procedures or as evidence in case of incidents.

Montesinos stated that using body cameras seeks to permanently document officer conduct and provide greater certainty for both citizens and agents during daily operations. He added that the technology strengthens internal institutional control processes by allowing review of procedures, handling of reports, and follow-up on specific actions when complaints or incidents arise.

The C4 operation consolidates information on a single monitoring platform where specialized personnel can observe in real time the patrols and actions of officers equipped with active transmission. This scheme is part of a public security modernization strategy focused on incorporating surveillance tools, operational control, and digital backup into police performance.
