PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Following an intense, approximately three-hour dialogue and negotiation, personnel from the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters successfully persuaded a male individual not to jump from a five-meter-high building.

The incident occurred on the rooftop of a commercial establishment located on Avenida Juárez at Avenida 30 in the Centro neighborhood. In the early hours of Saturday, the male individual remained for over five hours with the threat of throwing himself onto the pavement with the intent of ending his life.

After an emergency call was placed, personnel from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters arrived at the scene. Their initial action was to engage in dialogue with the presumed suicidal individual. They then positioned a ladder to instruct him to climb down. Upon his refusal, the uniformed officials continued their dialogue, though they did not achieve immediate results.

The individual, apparently between 35 and 40 years of age, had allegedly been attempting to jump onto the pavement since approximately 4:00 a.m. today. It was near 9:00 a.m. that he finally descended of his own volition and received the respective aid.

Although he did not disclose his intention or whether he was under the influence of any illicit substance, the man was referred for a medical evaluation by preventive authorities.

The area remained cordoned off as a preventive measure while the persuasion and rescue efforts for the individual were underway. The operation attracted the attention of numerous pedestrians and motorists passing through the zone, located in the tourist heart of Playa del Carmen.
